Silphium once grew in ancient Cyrenaica, in what is now eastern Libya, and became one of the region’s most prized plants. Valued across the Mediterranean for both food and medicine, it became an emblem of Cyrene and appeared prominently on the city’s silver coins. The plant later disappeared, leaving behind ancient descriptions and depictions—and an identity that is still debated today. 

Silphium Trace imagines the plant as something remembered rather than reconstructed. Sage, olive, amber, sand and dusty rose move through softened botanical forms, blurred and partially obscured as though pressed into aged paper. Plant and landscape seem to fade into one another across the print, leaving only traces of what was once there.
