ⵜⵍⴰⴱⴰ
A traditional handwoven wool wrap worn by Amazigh women of Libya’s Nafusa Mountains

Woven from sheep’s wool on the traditional aẓṭṭa (ⴰⵥⵟⵟⴰ), a vertical loom used in Jebel Nafusa, the tlaba was worn as an outer wrap in everyday life, through the colder months, and for special occasions. Made by hand from locally worked wool, each piece bears the hand of its maker and belongs to generations of Nafusi weaving tradition.

For Tlaba, the original textile is pared back to its most recognisable elements. Fine cream bands cross an earthy brown ground, while a subtle fibrous texture recalls the natural variation of handworked wool. The restrained stripe and soft, woven appearance keep the character of the tlaba at the centre of the design.
